Simpur Story

Simpur flower- Brunei’s pride

The Simpor flower has became Brunei’s National flower since Brunei hosted APEC summit in the year 2000. It symbolizes the diversity of nature. The colour of the flower itself represents the monarchy rule of the sultanate since yellow is a colour that symbolizes royalty in many parts of Southeast Asia. The broad leaves provide shade for young plants to grow healthily- this hints the nation’s tendency and dream to protect and preserve the natural treasures. Whereas, the flower which naturally faces downwards depicts Brunei’s rich cultural heritage which emphasizes on many range of concepts such as awar galat (respectful humility) and also values, such as bersopan santun (politeness).
To the Bruneians, “the unique blossoming of the flower and the green color of its leaves symbolizes the development” of the country’s “economy investment (from fruit) towards better economic growth (to flower).” (Dr.s Idris M. Said, Forestry Department - Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources)
